The Idea of Solipsism
I am here again writing with no exact topic in my mind, it is still the third week and me running out of ideas this soon isn't really ideal. I've been focusing more on finding new things to write about while ignoring the things that I could've jolted down on a paper long ago, or just general things that intrigue me. Since I couldn't think of anything new, bear with me while I just give some information on a concept that was the first thing that stuck with me, a new concept to me as a 13 y/o. The concept of "Solipsism", I never was actually able to understand what it meant when I first read about it. Even though I did not understand what it meant, it sparked a major interest in me and that did help me discover more about how my interests are varied on some specific topics.
"a: Have you heard about solipsism?
b: No, what is it?
a: It is a theory that nothing really exists, except for your consciousness and every thing, every one and every moment is a creation of your consciousness that is assumed reality for you.
b: How is it relevant?
a: I just wanted to let you know, if by any means it is true, you are the best creation my conscious has ever made."
When I first read about solipsism, it was around the lines of the above dialogue and was solely supposed to be a meme caption "I accidentally flirted with my best friend." Well, surprising I know but this was the way I discovered something that would change the trajectory of my life by majorly affecting the way I think. Not only how I think but it somewhat shook my belief system, the core foundation of making friends, meeting new people, experiencing things in ways I cannot explain.
This made me do some research not because it shook me but because it intrigued me and kept my mind looping around; How do people come up with things and ideas like this? How do they think? What gives them an edge over the generic thought patterns? As I continued my research regarding the concept of solipsism, I found various things about it in multiple platforms.
First was just like every other Gen-Z kid google "Solipsism meaning" which gave me the Oxford dictionary's meaning "the quality of being very self-centered or selfish." which also correlated to the lack of social-awareness. This was not what I am intrigued by, so I dug deeper and found out I needed to learn about the philosophy of solipsism not the definition.
Since I am not going to able to cite specific articles or websites from where I learned these things as this was long ago, I will briefly explain what the philosophy stands for and the major flaws that some researchers mentioned regarding how this entire philosophy itself is contradictory in some manner.
Solipsism as per its philosophy states that there is no assurance of existence of anything excluding your conscious. It is expressed as the view that "I am the only mind which exists." I do not believe I would need to explain the foundation of the philosophy but more than half of the research papers I've skimmed through regarding this philosophy tend to completely mark it as false. A major argument for this was the fact that if it were even remotely true the material world would not exist. A new world example would be if it were true and this is the first time you are reading the word 'solipsism' from an article that was published by some name you don't know and about concepts you don't know, then your conscious is not the only thing that exists.
If by any means you'd like to find more or get some in depth information on solipsism, there are a lot of research papers on solipsism.
